About Spain

A country in Southern Europe, which occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary and Balearic Islands. It is washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Spain is a popular tourist destination: foreigners come to relax by the sea, stroll along the streets of Madrid and Barcelona, try the famous paella and local wines.

In Spain, you can get a residence permit for an investment of 500,000 €, and after 10 years of permanent residence, apply for citizenship. At the same time, citizens of most countries of the world will have to give up their first passport: Spanish law prohibits having a second citizenship.

Spain passport ranking and benefits

  • 1

    Traveling to 188 countries

A Spanish passport provides visa-free access to the Schengen countries, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Hong Kong and other locations.

  • 2

Residing in Spain or another EU country

Spain is a member of the European Union. Citizenship of this country allows you to live on its territory or to move to another European country of choice. You will not need a residence permit in another EU country — just registering after three months of residence.

  • 3

Education and medical treatment in the European Union

It is easier for a child with a Spanish passport to enroll in a university in another EU country. Studying will cost less than for a citizen of a country that is not part of the union. In addition, Spanish citizens receive benefits for medical treatment in their country and other EU countries.

  • 4

    Work and worldwide business affairs

A Spanish passport allows you to open a company in this country or another European country. You will not need to get a residence permit or a work permit in the European Union in advance.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I get Spanish citizenship?

Spanish citizenship is obtained by right of blood, adoption, marriage or naturalisation.

To obtain Spanish citizenship by naturalisation, you must have lived in the country for at least 10 years, passed a Spanish language, culture, and laws knowledge tests, and have no criminal record.

A Spanish passport by marriage can be obtained in a year if you live permanently in the country.

Spanish citizenship cannot be obtained by investment. The country has a residence permit program for investors: applicants get a residence permit first, then in five years — permanent residence, and in another five years — citizenship.

  • How much to invest for a residence permit in Spain by investment?

Spain offers investors four options. The most popular one is the purchase of real estate starting from €500,000. The amount of investment does not depend on the family structure.

  • Does Spain recognize second citizenship?

Spain does not recognize dual citizenship, with the exception of a few Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. When applying for citizenship, you will have to give up all other citizenship.

  • How to live in Spain with citizenship of another country?

Spain is a member of the European Union, so you can move there using a simplified procedure with a passport of one of the countries of this union — for example, Portugal or Malta.

  • Who can get Spanish citizenship by birthright?

Spanish citizenship can be obtained by right of blood — if the child was born in a family in which at least one of the parents has Spanish citizenship. In this case, the place of birth does not matter.

Spanish citizenship can also be granted to a child who was born in a family where the parents do not have Spanish citizenship, but at least one of them was born in Spain.

Spanish citizenship by place of birth can be obtained by a child born in the country, provided that his parents are unknown.
