Sweden passport ranking and benefits

  • 1

Residence in Sweden or another EU country

Sweden is a member of the European Union. Citizenship of this country allows you to live on its territory or choose to move to another European country. You will not need a residence permit in another EU country — just register after three months of residence.

  • 2

    Access to 186 countries

A Swedish passport provides visa-free access to the Schengen countries, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries.

  • 3

Education and healthcare of the European Union

A child with a Swedish passport will have less obstacles with enrolling in a university in a EU country. Tuition for them will be less than for a citizen of a country that is not part of this EU. In addition, Swedish citizens receive benefits for medical treatment in their country and other EU countries.

  • 4

    Work and international business

A Swedish passport allows you to open a company in this country or other European state. To work in the European Union, you won’t have to obtain a residence permit or work permit in advance.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I get a Swedish passport?

Swedish citizenship is obtained by blood, adoption, marriage, descent, naturalisation, or special merits to the state.

To obtain Swedish citizenship by naturalisation, you must have lived in the country for at least 5 years, have a permanent income, have no tax debt, and no criminal record.

Children and parents of Swedish citizens receive citizenship by their descent.

A Swedish passport by marriage can be obtained after 3 years. The process is similar to naturalisation. Spouses or partners must have lived together for the last two years.

  • Does Sweden recognise second citizenship?

Since July 1, 2001, a Swedish citizen who has obtained a foreign citizenship does not lose his Swedish citizenship.

Former Swedish citizens who lost their Swedish citizenship by naturalisation in another country before July 1, 2001, could restore their Swedish citizenship by application within two years. Children of former Swedish citizens also have the right to obtain Swedish citizenship upon application.

  • How to live in Sweden with citizenship of another country?

Sweden is a member of the European Union, so you can move there using a sped-up procedure with a passport of one of the countries of this union — for example, Portugal or Malta.

  • Who can get Swedish citizenship by birthright?

Swedish citizenship can be obtained by right of blood — either when a child was born in marriage and the father is a citizen of the country; or out of wedlock, if the mother is Swedish. In this case, the place of birth does not matter.

Swedish citizenship cannot be obtained by right of land. This means that if a child was born in Sweden, but the parents do not have the status of permanent residence or Swedish citizenship, they will not receive Swedish citizenship.
